- “When the treasuries of Persia and Byzantium are opened to you, what sort of people will you be?” ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf said: “We shall say what Allah has commanded us to say.” He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Or perhaps otherwise: you will compete with one another, then envy one another, then turn your backs on one another, then hate one another—or something to that effect. Then you will proceed to the dwellings of the Emigrants and set some of them in authority over others.”
Muslim (8/212–213) and Ibn Mājah (2/481–482)—the latter including the additional wording—narrated it; the wording is Muslim’s. They said: ʿUmar ibn Suwayd al-ʿĀmirī narrated to us: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Wahb informed us: ʿAmr ibn al-Ḥārith informed me that Bakr ibn Sawādah told him that Yazīd ibn Rabāḥ—namely, Abū Firās, the client of ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ—told him, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said it. Al-Fasawī also narrated it in al-Tārīkh (2/514) through two other shaykhs, who said: Ibn Wahb narrated it to us through this chain. It includes the additional wording.

If he feels secure from Me in this world, I shall make him fear on the Day of Resurrection; and if he fears Me in this world, I shall grant him security on the Day of Resurrection.’”
Ibn al-Mubārak narrated it in al-Zuhd (163/2; from al-Kawākib, 575, no. 157—edition): ʿAwf narrated to us from al-Ḥasan as a mursal report. I say: This chain is authentic, were it not that it is mursal (a Successor’s report directly from the Prophet). However, immediately afterward Ibn Ṣāʿid said: “Narrated to us:”
