The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, ate, and we ate with him. Some of it remained, whereupon the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “O Allah, forgive them, have mercy on them, bless them, and grant them abundance in their provision.”
Aḥmad transmitted it (4/688) through an authentic three-narrator chain of transmission. Aḥmad and Muslim (6/122) also transmitted it, in abridged form, through the route of Yazīd ibn Jaʿfar ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Busr. Aḥmad and others also have other routes for it, some containing additions not found in others.
A point of benefit: A qarn is the people of a particular era. Scholars have differed over how long it lasts, offering various views mentioned by Ibn al-Athīr and others. One view is that it is one hundred years, and this hadith supports that view. Al-Ḥāfiẓ inclined to it in al-Fatḥ (7/4), saying: “There occurs in the hadith of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Busr in Muslim (!) that which indicates that a qarn is one hundred years, and this is the well-known view.” His attribution of it to Muslim is an error, caused by the fact that its basis is found there, as noted above.
2661 — “Spend, Bilāl, and do not fear impoverishment from the Possessor of the Throne.”
It has been narrated on the authority of Abū Hurayrah, Bilāl ibn Rabāḥ, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd, and ʿĀʾishah.
- As for the hadith of Abū Hurayrah, Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn relates it from him through several routes. The first: al-Ṭabarānī transmitted it in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (1/101/1), and al-Qaṭīʿī in Juzʾ al-Alf Dīnār (folio 40/1). Both said: Jaʿfar al-Firyābī reported to us; Bishr ibn Sayḥān reported to us; Ḥarb ibn Maymūn reported to us from Hishām ibn Ḥassān ibn Ḥassān, from Ibn Sīrīn, from him, as a report attributed to the Prophet, with this wording.
