In any case, it is adequate for corroborative support. Al-Ḥākim has another route for the hadith, which he relates from Muḥammad ibn Sulaymān al-ʿĀbid: Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid narrated to us, from Qays ibn Abī Ḥāzim, who said: ʿAlī said to al-Zubayr—and he mentioned a shortened version similar to it. Al-Dhahabī criticized it, saying: “Al-ʿĀbid is unknown, and there is cause for concern regarding the hadith.” Al-Ḥāfiẓ endorsed his statement in al-Lisān that he was “unknown.”
Yaʿlā ibn ʿUbayd contradicted him, saying: Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid narrated to us, from ʿAbd al-Salām—a man from his own district—who said: “ʿAlī spoke privately with al-Zubayr on the Day of the Camel ...” and he mentioned the hadith. Ibn Abī Shaybah related it in al-Muṣannaf (15/283/19673), and cited it in the biographical entry for this ʿAbd al-Salām. He reported that al-Bukhārī said: “... from ʿAlī and al-Zubayr; his having heard from them both is not established.” Al-ʿUqaylī said: “This hadith text is not reported through any established route.” Al-Dāraquṭnī declared it defective in al-ʿIlal (4/102) on account of its being mursal, with a break in its chain. Al-Dhahabī said of this ʿAbd al-Salām: “Unknown.” Al-Ḥāfiẓ’s assessment of him was similar: “Acceptable.” As for Ibn Ḥibbān, he included him among the trustworthy narrators in the generation following the Successors, and said:
