al-Misri; and al-Hakim (1/404–405), from Ahmad ibn Ibrahim ibn Milhan. Both said: Amr ibn Khalid al-Harrani narrated to us: Ubayd Allah ibn Amr al-Raqqi narrated to us, from Zayd ibn Abi Unaysah, from al-Qasim ibn Awf al-Shaybani, from Ali ibn al-Husayn, who said: Umm Salamah narrated to us that, while the Prophet was in her house, with some men among his Companions conversing in his presence, a man came and said, “Messenger of Allah, how much zakah is due on such-and-such an amount of dates?” The Messenger of Allah said, “Such-and-such an amount of dates.” The man said, “So-and-so wronged me and took such-and-such from me, adding an extra saʿ.” He said, “Then what if someone who wrongs you more severely than this came upon you?”
The people began discussing the matter, and the report astonished them, until one of them said, “Messenger of Allah, if a man is away with his camels, livestock, and crops, and has paid the zakah on his wealth, but is wrongfully imposed upon, what should he do while away?” The Messenger of Allah then repeated the foregoing wording.
Al-Hakim said, “Authentic according to the criteria of al-Bukhari and Muslim.” Al-Dhahabi concurred with him. However, both were mistaken: it is authentic, but not according to the criteria of both of them, nor even of either one of them. For Muslim did not narrate from Amr ibn Khalid, and al-Bukhari did not include al-Qasim ibn Awf al-Shaybani. The hadith was cited in al-Majmaʿ (3/82), where it says: “Al-Tabarani narrated it in al-Kabir and al-Awsat, and all its narrators are narrators of the Sahih.”
I say: Ahmad (6/301) also narrated it: Zakariyya ibn Adi narrated to us; he said: Ubayd Allah ibn Amr informed us—with this chain, in abridged form. The original reads Abd, which is an error.
