2651 — “Whoever recites Surat al-Kahf as it was revealed will have a light for him on the Day of Resurrection, extending from where he stands to Mecca. Whoever recites ten verses from its end, then the Dajjal emerges, will not be harmed by him. And whoever performs ablution and says: ‘Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise be to You. I bear witness that there is no god worthy of worship but You. I seek Your forgiveness and repent to You,’ it will be recorded on a parchment and then sealed, and it will not be broken until the Day of Resurrection.”
Al-Nasa’i recorded it in ʿAmal al-Yawm wa al-Laylah (81 and 952), and al-Tabarani in al-Awsat (1/5/1), through Yahya ibn Muhammad ibn al-Sakan; and al-Hakim (1/564), through Abu Qilabah ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Muhammad—the additional wording is his. Both narrated from Yahya ibn Kathir al-ʿAnbari, who said: Shuʿbah narrated to us from Abu Hashim al-Rummani, from Abu Mijlaz, from Qays ibn ʿAbbad, from Abu Saʿid al-Khudri, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: … and he mentioned it.
Al-Tabarani said: “No one narrated it from Shuʿbah except Yahya.” I say: He is trustworthy and among the narrators of the two Sahihs, as are those above him in the chain. Thus, it is an authentic chain of transmission meeting the criteria of the two Shaykhs. Al-Hakim’s statement, “Authentic according to the criteria of Muslim,” is merely one of his errors, even though al-Dhahabi followed him in it.
It has, however, been criticized on the grounds that it is attributed to the Companion. Al-Haythami said (1/239): “Al-Tabarani narrated it in al-Awsat, and its narrators are those of the Sahih; except that al-Nasa’i said after citing it in al-Yawm wa al-Laylah: ‘This is an error; the correct version is attributed to the Companion.’ He then narrated it through the reports of al-Thawri and Ghundar, from Shuʿbah, attributed to the Companion.” Something similar appears in al-Targhib (1/105).
