2648 — “When two men from among the Companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, met, they would not part until one recited to the other: ‘By Time: surely man is in loss,’ then one would bid the other farewell with the greeting of peace.”
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Awsat (2/11/2/5256): Muhammad ibn Hisham al-Mustamli narrated to us; Ubayd Allah ibn Aishah narrated to us; Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us from Thabit al-Bunani, from Abu Madinah al-Darimi—who was a Companion [of the Prophet]—who said: … then he cited it. He said: “It is not narrated from Abu Madinah except through this chain of transmission.” Ibn al-Madini said: “Abu Madinah’s name was Abdullah ibn Hafs.”
I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission. Its narrators are trustworthy and are narrators of Muslim, apart from Muhammad ibn Hisham al-Mustamli. He was Abu Jafar al-Marwazi, known as Ibn Abi al-Dumayk, and served as the dictation-repeater for al-Hasan ibn Arafah. He died in 289 AH. Al-Khatib included his biography (3/361–362) and declared him trustworthy. Al-Daraqutni said: “There is no harm in him.”
Al-Haythami also cited the hadith in al-Majma (10/307) and said: “Al-Tabarani narrated it in al-Awsat, and its narrators are those of the Sahih, apart from Ibn Aishah, who is trustworthy.” Then I found the hadith in Shuab al-Iman (6/501/9057), through Yahya ibn Abi Bukayr, who said: Hammad ibn Salamah informed us of it. And he said:
