Silsilat al-Ahadith al-SahihahNasir al-Din al-Albani

Ibn Abī Ḥātim reported from his father:
“I know of no one who has transmitted this ḥadīth except Hāshim ibn al-Barīd.”

I (al-Albānī) say: He is trustworthy, and the charge that he inclined toward Shīʿism does not detract from him. For that reason al-Būṣīrī said in al-Zawāʾid (folio 27/2): “This chain of transmission (isnād) is good (ḥasan).”

I further say: The apparent sense of the narration is that he ﷺ made that statement while urinating. It therefore indicates the permissibility of speaking in the lavatory. The report that “Allah loathes that”—apart from being weak in its chain—is not even explicit, for its wording is:

“Two men must not converse while each of them is defecating, looking at the private part of the other, for Allah detests that.”

This text only forbids that specific situation: talking while at the same time gazing at the private parts (ʿawrah). It does not show that mere conversation—although distasteful in itself—is something Allah, blessed and exalted, despises. Declaring it prohibited would require separate evidence, and we have found none. The ban on looking at the ʿawrah, on the other hand, is established by a number of aḥādīth.

I later discovered a supporting narration (shāhid) from Ibn ʿUmar with similar wording. Ibn al-Jārūd recorded it in al-Muntaqā (27–28), and its chain is also good. I then located it in the Fawāʾid of ʿAbd al-Bāqī ibn Qāniʿ (160/1–2), where he brings it through two routes from Nāfiʿ on the authority of Ibn ʿUmar. The narrators in both chains are reliable and well-known, except that the shaykh in the first isnād is Muḥammad ibn ʿUthmān ibn Abī Shaybah—about whom there is some discussion—and the shaykh in the other route is Muḥammad ibn ʿAnbasah ibn Laqiṭ al-Ḍabbī. Al-Khaṭīb (3/139) cited him, relating this very ḥadīth from Ibn Qāniʿ, but mentioned neither criticism nor commendation about him. Since he is corroborated by the report in Ibn al-Jārūd, the ḥadīth is authentic.
