his ability, and Allah does not burden any soul beyond its capacity. No command to make up the fast has been established, as previously indicated. We hold that it is the duty of Islamic governments to unify the day on which they begin fasting and the day on which they end it, just as they unify the day of their Hajj. Until they agree on this, we do not believe that their peoples should be divided among themselves, with some fasting with their own state and others with another state. This is an application of the principle of warding off the greater harm by accepting the lesser harm, as established in the principles of jurisprudence. Allah Most High is the Granter of success.
2625 — “Had you not measured it, you would have continued to eat from it, and it would have remained for you.”
Muslim transmitted it (7/60) through Maʿqil, from Abū al-Zubayr, from Jābir: A man came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, asking him for food, so he gave him half a wasq of barley. The man, his wife, and their guest continued eating from it until he measured it. He then came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and related this, whereupon he said the above.
Ibn Lahīʿah also followed him, saying: “Abū al-Zubayr narrated it to us likewise.” Aḥmad transmitted it (3/337, 347) through two routes from him.
Ḥassān ibn ʿAbd Allāh contradicted them both, saying: “Ibn Lahīʿah narrated to us; Yūnus ibn Yazīd narrated to us; Abū Isḥāq narrated to us, from Saʿīd ibn al-Ḥārith, from his grandfather Nawfal ibn al-Ḥārith ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib: He sought the help of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, in getting married, and he married him to a woman. He looked for something but found nothing. So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sent Abū Rāfiʿ and Abū Ayyūb with his armor, and they pawned it with a Jewish man for thirty sāʿs of barley. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, gave it to me, and we ate from it for half a year. Then we measured it and found it exactly as we had put it away.” Nawfal said: “I mentioned that to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and he cited the hadith above, except that he said, ‘as long as you lived,’ in place of, ‘and it would have remained for you.’”
Al-Ḥākim transmitted it (3/246), and from him al-Bayhaqī in al-Dalāʾil (6/114). Al-Ḥākim and al-Dhahabī made no comment on it. Ibn Lahīʿah is weak due to his poor retention, and Abū
