things fully capable—three times—.
O Allah, none can withhold what You give, nor can anyone give what You withhold, and no possessor of fortune can profit by his fortune against You.
Narrated by al-Bukhārī (2/264–265), Muslim (2/95), Abū Dāwūd (1/236), al-Nasāʾī (1/197), Ibn al-Sunnī in “ʿAmal al-Yawm wa’l-Laylah” (no. 112), and Aḥmad (4/245, 247, 250, 251, 254, 255) through the route of Warrād, the scribe of al-Mughīra ibn Shuʿba, who said:
“Al-Mughīra ibn Shuʿba dictated to me in a letter to Muʿāwiya that the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—(used to say) …” and he mentioned it.
This chain is authentic, and the ḥadith itself is well known for its soundness. I have quoted it here only because of the extra phrases it contains, for they are unfamiliar to most people. The first addition is reported by Aḥmad and Abū Dāwūd; the second by al-Ṭabarānī via another route from al-Mughīra whose transmitters, as al-Ḥāfiẓ states, are trustworthy. In Ibn al-Sunnī, through the first route, occurs the wording “in His hand is all good,” and its chain is authentic. The third addition appears in al-Nasāʾī and in one report of Aḥmad, and its chain too is authentic. Ibn Khuzayma also recorded it, as noted in Fatḥ al-Bārī.
This ḥadith demonstrates the legitimacy of reciting this remembrance after concluding the obligatory prayer with salām. Those who reject anything beyond the formula “O Allah, You are Peace…” after the farḍ—and who claim that the other litanies are to be recited only after the post-prayer sunnah—have thereby missed out on its merit. This ḥadith refutes them plainly and decisively, just as did ḥadith no. 102.
197 – “If you see me in such a condition, do not greet me with salām, for if you do I will not respond to you.”
Narrated by Ibn Mājah (1/145–146) and Ibn Abī Ḥātim in “al-ʿIlal” (1/34) from ʿĪsā ibn Yūnus, from Hāshim ibn al-Barīd, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAqīl, from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh:
“A man passed by the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—while he was urinating and greeted him, whereupon the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—… (and the narration continues).”
