began the day not fasting should complete the rest of his day.” She said: “Thereafter, we would fast on that day and have our young children fast as well. We would make toys for them out of wool and take them to the mosque. Whenever one of them cried for food, we would give him the toy until it was time to break the fast.” It was recorded by al-Bukhārī (4/163), Muslim (3/152), Ibn Khuzaymah (2088), al-Ṭaḥāwī (1/336), Ibn Ḥibbān (3611), al-Bayhaqī (4/288), and Aḥmad (6/359).

As for the hadith of Muḥammad ibn Ṣayfī, he said: On the Day of ʿĀshūrāʾ, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to us: “Has any one of you eaten today?” We replied: “Some of us have eaten, and some have not.” He said: “Then complete the rest of your day, whether you have eaten or not; and send word to the people of the outlying areas, so that they may complete the rest of their day.” That is, the inhabitants of the outlying areas around Medina. It was recorded by Ibn Abī Shaybah in al-Musannaf (3/54–55), and from him by Ibn Mājah (1/528–529), Ibn Khuzaymah (2091), Ibn Ḥibbān (932, Mawārid), and Aḥmad (4/488), through the route of Ḥuṣayn, from al-Shaʿbī, from him. I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission, as al-Būṣīrī stated in al-Zawāʾid (110/1).

As for the hadith of Hind bint Asmāʾ, Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq narrated it: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Bakr ibn Muḥammad narrated to me from Ḥabīb ibn Hind ibn Asmāʾ al-Aslamī, from him, that he said: “The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sent me to my people of Aslam and said: ‘Command your people to fast this day, the Day of ʿĀshūrāʾ. Whoever among them you find to have eaten at the beginning of his day, let him fast the latter part of it.’” It was recorded by Aḥmad (3/484) and al-Ṭaḥāwī (1/335–336). I say: This is a good chain of transmission; its narrators are known and trustworthy, except for Ḥabīb ibn Hind,
