Al-Ṭayālisī’s version of this hadith includes an account, at the end of which is another hadith, narrated by al-Ḍiyāʾ in al-Mukhtārah, nos. 258 and 259, through the route of al-Ṭayālisī and others.
2624 — “Proclaim among your people—or among the people—on the Day of ʿĀshūrāʾ: whoever has eaten should fast for the remainder of his day [until nightfall], and whoever has not eaten should fast.”
It has been reported from Salamah ibn al-Akwaʿ, al-Rubayyiʿ bint Muʿawwidh, Muḥammad ibn Ṣayfī, Hind bint Asmāʾ, Abū Hurayrah, ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbbās, unnamed men of Aslam, Maʿbad al-Qurashī, and Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn in mursal form.
- As for the hadith of Salamah, Aḥmad (4/50) said: Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd narrated to us from Yazīd ibn ʿUbayd, who said: Salamah ibn al-Akwaʿ narrated to us that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to a man of Aslam—and he then cited it. This is an authentic three-narrator chain of transmission that meets the criteria of al-Bukhārī and Muslim. Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd is al-Qaṭṭān. Through him, it was narrated by al-Bukhārī (13/205–206), al-Nasāʾī (1/319), in al-Kubrā (fol. 22/1), and Ibn Khuzaymah (2092).
It was then narrated by al-Bukhārī (4/113–114 and 201), Muslim (3/151–152), al-Dārimī (2/22), al-Bayhaqī (4/220 and 288), Aḥmad (4/47, 48), and Ibn Ḥibbān (5/252/3610), through other routes from Yazīd ibn ʿUbayd. The chains of Aḥmad, al-Dārimī, and al-Bukhārī are likewise three-narrator chains. The first additional phrase is found in Aḥmad’s version, and the other in Muslim’s.
- As for the hadith of al-Rubayyiʿ, she said: On the morning of ʿĀshūrāʾ, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sent word to the villages of the Anṣār around Medina: “Whoever began the day fasting should complete his fast, and whoever”
