2605 — “Whoever remains seated incurs no blame.” The caller announces this at the end of his call to prayer on a cold day.
Ibn Abi Shaybah transmitted it in al-Musnad (2/5/2): Khalid ibn Makhlad informed us; he said: Sulayman ibn Bilal related to me; he said: Yahya ibn Sa'id related to me; he said: Muhammad ibn Ibrahim ibn al-Harith (in the original: ibn Nu'aym ibn al-Harith) informed me, from Nu'aym al-Nahham, of Banu 'Adi ibn Ka'b, who said:
The call for the dawn prayer was made on a cold day while I was wrapped in my wife's cloak, so I said, “If only the caller would announce: ‘Whoever remains seated incurs no blame.’” Then the Prophet’s caller made the announcement, mentioning the report.
I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission, transmitted by at least two chains, and it meets the conditions of the two Shaykhs. Al-Bayhaqi also transmitted it (1/398) by way of Ibn Abi Uways: Sulayman ibn Bilal related it to me with this chain, adding: “That was during the time of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, at the end of his call to prayer.” He said: “Al-Awza'i corroborated him from Yahya ibn Sa'id, except that he said: When he said, ‘Prayer is better than sleep,’ he said, ‘Whoever remains seated incurs no blame.’”
I say: This addition was narrated by Hisham ibn 'Ammar: 'Abd al-Hamid ibn Habib ibn Abi al-'Ishrin related to us; al-Awza'i related it to us with this chain. Al-Bayhaqi transmitted it. Hisham and 'Abd al-Hamid are both weak. Al-Haythami alludes to this when, after citing it with this addition, he says:
