And if that is so, why is it that many Muslims today—including some among the learned—do not perform tamattuʿ, even though they know what those noble Companions did not know at first? Among this is his statement, peace and blessings be upon him, in one of those hadiths: “Umrah has been incorporated into Hajj until the Day of Resurrection.” Do they not fear that Aishah’s supplication may befall them?!
2594 — “Was there not a merciful man among you?!”
Al-Tabarani narrated it in his Narration from al-Nasa’i (316/1): Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Harb al-Marwazi informed us; Ali ibn al-Husayn ibn Waqid informed us from his father, from Yazid al-Nahwi, from Ikrimah, from Ibn Abbas: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, sent out a military detachment which took booty, among whom was a man. He said to them: “I am not one of them. I fell in love with a woman and followed her. Let me look at her once, then do with me whatever you wish.” They looked and found a tall, dark-complexioned woman. He said to her:
“Accept Islam, Hubaysh, before life is spent.
If I had followed you and caught up with you at Hilyah,
or reached you at al-Khawaniq, would it not have been right
for a lover to attain his desire, after enduring night-travel and rainstorms?”
She said: “Yes, may I be your ransom!” They then brought him forward and beheaded him. The woman came, stood over him, gave a single gasp, and died. When they came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, they informed him of this, and he said—and then cited it.
I later found it in al-Nasa’i’s al-Siyar (2/47/1–2) with this chain of transmission, except that he said:
“If I followed you and caught up with you … [at Hilyah, or reached you] (1) at al-Khawaniq—
would it not have been right for a lover to attain his desire,
after enduring night-travel and rainstorms?”
