As I write this, I know that some of those who reject these hadiths, or subject them to false interpretation—as al-Suyuti did, may Allah forgive us and him, in some of his treatises—are motivated only by their excessiveness in venerating the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and by their love for him. Thus, they refuse to accept that his parents were as he himself informed us they were, as though they cared more for his parents than he did, peace and blessings be upon him! Some of them may even have no scruple in relying, in this regard, on the hadith widely circulated by some people, which states that Allah brought the Prophet’s mother back to life for him—or, in another version, both of his parents. This is a fabricated and false hadith according to scholars such as al-Daraqutni, al-Jurqani, Ibn Asakir, al-Dhahabi, and al-Asqalani, as well as others, as has been explained in its proper place. If you wish, consult al-Jurqani’s book, Fabrications and Reprehensible Reports, with annotations by Dr. Abd al-Rahman al-Faryawai (1/222–229).
Ibn al-Jawzi said in Fabricated Hadiths (1/284): “This hadith is undoubtedly fabricated. Its fabricator had little understanding and no knowledge; for had he possessed knowledge, he would have known that one who dies as a disbeliever gains no benefit from believing after being brought back to life—indeed, not even if he believed at the moment of beholding the reality. To refute this hadith, it is enough to cite Allah Most High’s words: ‘and dies as a disbeliever,’ and the Prophet’s statement in Sahih Muslim: ‘I asked my Lord for permission to seek forgiveness for my mother, but He did not permit me.’”
Shaykh Abd al-Rahman al-Yamani, may Allah have mercy on him, aptly described such people in a clear and concise statement in his annotation to Imam al-Shawkani’s Compendium of Fabricated Hadiths. He said (p. 322): “Love often carries some people away, so that they overstep the evidence and fight against it. Whoever is granted success recognizes that this is incompatible with the love sanctioned by Islam. Allah is the One whose help is sought.”
I say: Among those whom love carried away was al-Suyuti, may Allah forgive him. He inclined to authenticate the false hadith of revivification, despite its rejection by leading scholars, as mentioned above, and attempted, in his book al-La'ali'—
