Ahmad likewise narrated it (1/161–162 and 163). I therefore thought that Muhammad ibn ‘Amr in the chain of transmission of al-Zuhd was an error, but it then became clear that it was indeed a transmission: I found that Imam Ahmad narrated it (2/333) through him, from Abu Salamah, from Abu Hurayrah, with the same wording; and then through him, from Abu Salamah, from Talhah. Its chain through Abu Hurayrah is good, as al-Mundhiri stated in al-Targhib (1/142).
It is further corroborated by the hadith of ‘Amir ibn Sa‘d ibn Abi Waqqas, who said: “I heard Sa‘d and some people among the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, saying...” He then cited it in a fuller wording. Ibn Khuzaymah narrated it in his Sahih (310), as did al-Hakim (1/200) and Ahmad (1/177), through Makhramah, from his father, from him. Al-Hakim said: “Its chain of transmission is authentic, though the two of them did not record it. The hidden defect in it is that a group of the people of Egypt stated that Makhramah did not hear from his father because of his young age; while some others affirmed that he did hear from him.”
I say: The stronger view is that his transmission from his father was by finding his father’s written book, and it is valid evidence. Perhaps Malik, may Allah have mercy on him, alluded to this when he narrated the hadith in al-Muwatta’ (1/187) as an unchained report, saying that it had reached him from ‘Amir ibn Sa‘d with the same wording, except that he did not mention: “and some people among the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.”
2592 — “Indeed, my father and your father are in the Fire.”
Al-Tabarani narrated it in al-Kabir (3552): Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allah al-Hadrami narrated to us; Abu Kurayb narrated to us; Abu Khalid al-Ahmar narrated to us, from Dawud ibn Abi Hind, from al-‘Abbas ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman, from ‘Imran ibn Husayn, who said: Husayn came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: “What do you think of a man who maintained ties of kinship and entertained guests...”
