Al-Tabarani then also recorded it in al-Kabir (3/89/1–2) and in al-Saghir (p. 112—Hind), through Dawud ibn Abi Hind, from Ibn Jubayr, with the same report. In al-Kabir, he also has another chain from Ibn ‘Abbas. He said (3/113/2): Muhammad ibn ‘Ali ibn Shu‘ayb al-Samsar narrated to us; my father informed us; Abu al-Nadr Hashim ibn al-Qasim informed us; Warqa’ ibn ‘Umar informed us, from ‘Amr ibn Dinar, from him, attributed to the Prophet. A fourth chain from him has already preceded with the wording: “O Allah, grant Ibn ‘Abbas wisdom ...”
Al-Tabarani recorded the second phrase (3/144/1) through Shabib, from ‘Ikrimah, from Ibn ‘Abbas, attributed to the Prophet. In sum, the hadith is authentic in this complete form. In Sharh al-Tahawiyyah (p. 234), it was attributed to al-Bukhari, but this is an error, as I had pointed out in my documentation of the hadith there. I also mentioned there that Imam Ahmad narrated it through another chain with a different wording, of which I cited an excerpt. I now consider it appropriate to quote it in full, since it contains a juristic benefit that few people know and act upon. It follows:
2590 — “What is the matter with me [in another narration: What is the matter with you], that I place you beside me, yet you step back?!”
Al-Hakim recorded it (3/534); the second narration and the forthcoming addition in brackets are his. Ahmad also recorded it (1/330), and the wording is his, through Hatim ibn Abi Saghirah, Abu Yunus, from ‘Amr ibn Dinar, who said that Kurayb informed him that Ibn ‘Abbas said: “I came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, [while he was praying during the latter part of the night], and I prayed behind him. He took hold of my hand and pulled me over, placing me beside him. Then, when the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, turned his attention to his prayer, I stepped back,”
