It has other corroborating reports recorded by Ibn Khuzaymah in his Sahih (1124–1126), Ibn Hibban (441), and al-Bazzar in his Musnad (1/245/503, 517, and 518).
2589 — “O Allah, grant him understanding of the religion and teach him interpretation.”
Al-Tabarani recorded it (3/164/2), and Abu ‘Ali al-Sawwaf narrated it from him in al-Fawa’id (3/166–167). Al-Diya also narrated it in al-Mukhtarah (226/2), through two chains from Shibl ibn ‘Abbad, from Sulayman al-Ahwal, from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ‘Abbas: he poured out water for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to perform minor ablution at the home of his aunt Maymunah. When he came out, he asked, “Who set out my ablution water for me?” She replied, “Your nephew, O Messenger of Allah.” He then said the above.
Al-Diya said: “Our purpose in citing this hadith is the words: ‘and teach him interpretation.’ As for the words, ‘grant him understanding of the religion,’ they have been recorded in the two Sahih collections (1).”
Al-Diya then recorded it (233–234), as did al-Bayhaqi in al-Dala’il (vol. 2, chapter: What Has Been Related Concerning His Supplication for Ibn ‘Abbas) and Ahmad (1/266, 314, 328, and 335), through ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Uthman ibn Khuthaym, from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, with the same wording. Al-Tabarani likewise recorded it (3/84/2), and its chain is authentic according to Muslim’s criteria.
Al-Diya then said: “The two did not record the words, ‘and teach him interpretation’; this is a good addition.” I say: Al-Hakim authenticated it (3/534), and al-Dhahabi concurred with him.
