Al-Hakim also narrated it, as did al-Nasa’i in al-Yawm wa al-Laylah (211 and 1033), from whom Ibn al-Sunni narrated it (202); and Ibn Abi Shaybah in al-Musannaf (8/57/3646), from whom Abu Ya‘la narrated it (13/152/7195), all through ‘Ammar ibn Ruzayq, from Abdullah ibn Isa.
However, the hadith is authentic, for I found another route for it. Ibn Qani‘ narrated it in his biographical entry on Sahl ibn Hunayf in his Mu‘jam al-Sahabah, as did Ibn al-Sunni (201). Both narrated through Yahya ibn Abd al-Hamid al-Himmani: Abd al-Rahman ibn Sulayman ibn al-Ghasil narrated to us; Maslamah ibn Khalid al-Ansari narrated to us, from Abu Umamah ibn Sahl ibn Hunayf, from his father, traced back to the Prophet, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, with the wording: “What prevents one of you, when he sees…”—the hadith.
This Maslamah is unknown, as al-Dhahabi said in al-Mizan. The rest of its narrators are among Muslim’s narrators, though al-Himmani is weak.
Imam Malik (3/118–119) also narrated it, as did Ibn Hibban in his Sahih (1424, al-Mawarid), from Muhammad ibn Abi Umamah ibn Sahl ibn Hunayf, who heard his father say:
“My father, Sahl ibn Hunayf, bathed at al-Kharrar and removed a cloak that he was wearing, while Amir ibn Rabi‘ah was looking on. Sahl was a fair-skinned man with a fine complexion. Amir ibn Rabi‘ah said to him, ‘I have never seen the like of what I see today—not even the skin of a virgin!’ Sahl immediately fell ill, and his illness became severe. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, was informed that Sahl had fallen ill and would not be proceeding with him, so the Messenger of Allah, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, came to him. Sahl told him what had happened with Amir. Thereupon the Messenger of Allah, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, said: ‘Why would one of you kill his brother? Why did you not invoke blessing for him? The evil eye is real. Perform ablution for him.’ So Amir performed ablution for him, and Sahl then went on with the Messenger of Allah, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, with no harm remaining.”
This is an authentic chain of transmission.
