Silsilat al-Ahadith al-SahihahNasir al-Din al-Albani

Abū Ḥalbas is unknown; see p. 159.

I then came across the supporting report in al-Ṭabarānī’s al-Awsaṭ (4/226/8497). He narrated it through ʿAmr ibn al-Ḥuṣayn al-ʿUqaylī: Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUlāthah narrated to us; Suwayd ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz narrated to us, from Makhūl, from Wāthilah, attributed to the Prophet, with the same wording. He said: “No one narrated it from Saʿīd (!) ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz except Ibn ʿUlāthah; ʿAmr ibn al-Ḥuṣayn alone narrated it.”

I say: He is abandoned and accused, as has been mentioned repeatedly. Thus, his hadith has no value as supporting evidence. Suwayd ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz is nearly as bad, but I fear that the name Suwayd in the chain has been corrupted from Saʿīd. This is how it appears in al-Ṭabarānī’s appended remark on it, and that is more likely in my view, since he, unlike Suwayd, is known to narrate from Makhūl. Saʿīd is trustworthy, though his memory later became confused.

2562 — “When you pass by the gardens of Paradise, graze therein.” It was asked, “What are the gardens of Paradise?” He replied, “The circles of remembrance.”

Al-Tirmidhī (2/265) and al-Bayhaqī in Shuʿab al-Īmān (1/322) recorded it from Muḥammad ibn Thābit al-Bunānī, who said: My father narrated to me from Anas ibn Mālik, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said it. Al-Tirmidhī said: “A good, singular hadith through this route.”

I say: This is due to al-Tirmidhī’s leniency, may Allah have mercy on him, for there is consensus that this Muḥammad ibn Thābit is weak. Although some indicated that he was truthful in himself, his weakness lay in his retention. Ibn ʿAdī recorded this hadith of his in al-Kāmil (folio 290/1), among a number of hadiths that he cited for him, then said:
