to that effect. Some of them have already been cited, together with a discussion of their legal implications, under hadiths 200 and 314.
- “O people, do not raise me above my proper rank, for Allah took me as a servant before He took me as a prophet.”
Al-Hakim (3/179) narrated it by way of ʿAli ibn Qadim: ʿAbd al-Salam ibn Harb narrated to us, from Yahya ibn Saʿid, who said: We were with ʿAli ibn al-Husayn when some people from Kufah came. ʿAli said: “O people of Iraq, love us with the love prescribed by Islam. I heard my father say that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said”—and he then cited the hadith.
I mentioned it to Saʿid ibn al-Musayyib, and he said: “And after He had taken him as a prophet.”
Al-Hakim said: “Its chain of transmission is authentic.” Al-Dhahabi agreed with him. I say: It is as they said.
- “There is no day on which Allah frees more servants from the Fire than the Day of ʿArafah. He draws near, then boasts of them to the angels, saying: ‘What do these people seek?’”
Muslim (4/107), al-Nasaʾi (2/44)—also in al-Kubra (folio 83/1)—Ibn Majah (3014), al-Daraqutni in his Sunan (p. 289), likewise al-Bayhaqi (5/118), and Ibn ʿAsakir in the treatise The Virtue of ʿArafah (folio 2/2), all narrated it by way of Makhramah ibn Bukayr, from his father, who said: I heard Yunus ibn Yusuf narrating from Saʿid ibn al-Musayyib, from ʿAʾishah, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said—and he then cited the hadith.
