- “No person whose relative comes to him asking for a share of the bounty Allah has bestowed upon him, and who then withholds it from him, but that on the Day of Resurrection a serpent known as a shujāʿ will be brought forth for him from Hell, licking its lips, and it will be wound around his neck.”
It was recorded by al-Tabarani in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (1/235/2, old edition) and al-Muʿjam al-Awsaṭ (2/42/1/5723), through ʿAbd Allah ibn Abi Ziyad al-Qatwani: Ishaq ibn al-Rabiʿ al-ʿAsfari informed us, from Dawud ibn Abi Hind, from ʿAmir al-Shaʿbi, from Jarir ibn ʿAbd Allah, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
I say: This is a good chain of transmission. All its narrators are trustworthy except al-ʿAsfari, from whom a number of other trustworthy narrators, besides al-Qatwani, also reported. Al-Dhahabi said: “Ibn ʿAdi mentioned him and cited two singular reports from him. The text of one of them is: ‘Every act of kindness is charity.’ Ahmad ibn Badil also narrated from him, and Ishaq is truthful, if Allah wills.” Al-Hafiz concurred with this in al-Tahdhib. In al-Taqrib, however, he said: “Acceptable.”
Al-Mundhiri (2/33), followed by al-Haythami (8/154), said: “Al-Tabarani narrated it in al-Awsaṭ and al-Kabīr with a good chain of transmission.” Al-Mundhiri cites corroborating reports for this hadith, one of which is in Sunan Abi Dawud; its documentation was previously given under no. 2438.
