Muhammad narrated to us; ʿAmr ibn al-ʿAbbas narrated to us: ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to us, from Muʿawiyah ibn Salih, from Abu Maryam, from Abu Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed that a sheep be slaughtered and divided among the neighbours. He said: “So I slaughtered it, divided it among the neighbours, and set aside the foreleg for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), for the foreleg was his favourite part of the sheep. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came, ʿAʾishah said: ‘Nothing of it remains with us except the foreleg.’ He said: ‘All of it remains except the foreleg.’”
The author of al-Mukhtasar—namely Ibn Hajar—said: “Its chain of transmission is good.” Al-Haythami said in al-Majmaʿ (3/109): “Al-Bazzar narrated it, and its narrators are trustworthy.”
I say: All of its narrators are known and trustworthy men found in al-Tahdhib, except for ʿAli ibn Muhammad, whom I have not presently identified. Then I found the hadith under discussion in al-Mustadrak (4/136), in an abbreviated form, through the route of Israʾil, from Abu Ishaq, with this chain from ʿAʾishah. She said: “We had a sheep and feared that it would die, so we slaughtered it and distributed it, except for its shoulder.” He said: “Its chain of transmission is authentic.” Al-Dhahabi concurred with him.
2545 — “Indeed, Allah does not accept the repentance of a servant who disbelieves after embracing Islam.”
Ahmad recorded it (4/446 and 5/2–3) through the route of Abu Qazʿah al-Bahili, from Hakim ibn Muʿawiyah, from his father, who said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said it. I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission; all its narrators are trustworthy. Abu Qazʿah’s name was Suwayd ibn Hujayr.
