wanted to depart, he came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: “O Qays, do not come on the Day of Resurrection with a camel upon your neck that is bellowing, a cow that is lowing, or a sheep that is bleating; and do not be like Abu Righal.” He then mentioned the rest of the hadith.
Al-Bayhaqi recorded it (4/157) through Hisham ibn Saʿd, with his chain of transmission from Qays. I say: This is a good chain of transmission, given the well-known disagreement concerning Hisham. He placed Qays in this account in place of his father, Saʿd. If he retained it accurately, then so be it; otherwise, the correct version is that found in the two preceding narrations: namely, that it was Saʿd.

Ahmad recorded it (2/418): Qutaybah narrated to us: ʿAbd al-ʿAziz ibn Muhammad narrated to us, from al-ʿAlaʾ—that is, Ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman—from his father, from Abu Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said this. I say: Its chain of transmission is authentic according to Muslim’s criteria, and Ibn Hibban also authenticated it (3378, al-Ihsan). ʿAbd al-ʿAziz ibn Muhammad is al-Darawardi; the criticism concerning him is not detrimental. He was corroborated regarding the first part of it by Muhammad ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Mujabbir, from al-ʿAlaʾ through the same chain. Abu Yaʿla recorded it (6691), as did Ibn ʿAdi (2/299), who said: “Despite Ibn Mujabbir’s weakness, his hadith is recorded.” I say: But Maslamah ibn Qasim and al-Khatib accused him of lying, so his corroboration carries no weight. Thus, the main reliance is
