Note: Al-Suyuti included this hadith in al-Jamiʿ al-Kabir (6–14517), citing its sources as: “(q) in (1), and Ibn ʿAsakir, from Ibn ʿAbbas.” The editorial committee commented: “There is a blank in the original in all the manuscripts.”
I say: It is known from al-Suyuti’s introduction to al-Jamiʿ, while discussing his source-symbols, that he states: “The symbol (q) stands for al-Bayhaqi: if it is in al-Sunan, I leave it unqualified; otherwise, I specify it.” Thus, whether the blank in question originated with the author—as is apparent—or with the copyists, it should read: al-Dalaʾil, as is understood from the preceding source citation. This blank has been supplied in some manuscripts of al-Jamiʿ, but the particle “in” remained. The compiler of Kanz al-ʿUmmal (11/456) followed this, but omitted “in,” with the result that the meaning became: “... al-Bayhaqi in al-Sunan”! This is incorrect.
After writing the above, I found that Ibn al-Jazari had deemed the hadith strong in his exceptional work, al-Nashr fi al-Qiraʾat al-ʿAshr, where he said (2/391): “Ibn Abi Hatim narrated, through a good chain of transmission, from Ibn ʿAbbas, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said ...” He then cited the hadith.
