“Al-Ṭabarānī narrated it in al-Awsaṭ with a good chain of transmission.” He mentioned this while reconciling it with the hadith of Umaymah bint Ruqayqah, who said: “The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, had a wooden vessel beneath his bed, in which he would urinate at night.” It was recorded by Abū Dāwūd and others, and is referenced in Ṣaḥīḥ Abī Dāwūd (19). The reconciliation is that the hadith under discussion is understood to refer to a vessel in which the urine remains for a long time. Thus, it does not conflict with Umaymah’s hadith, since what is placed in such a vessel does not generally remain there for long. And Allah knows best.
Ibn Abī Shaybah narrated in al-Muṣannaf, in the Book of Ritual Purity (1/175, al-ʿAzīziyyah edition, India), from Sufyān, from Abū Isḥāq, from Bakr ibn Māʿiz, from Abū Buraydah—whom he thought to be the narrator—from his father, who said: “Do not urinate in a basin in a room where you pray, and do not urinate in your washing-place.”
I say: Its narrators, up to Bakr, are trustworthy and are narrators of both al-Bukhārī and Muslim, except for Abū Buraydah, whom I have not identified. It is possible that this is a textual corruption of Abū Burdah, the son of Abū Mūsā al-Ashʿarī, for he narrated from his father, and Abū Isḥāq al-Sabīʿī narrated from him. Both are trustworthy narrators of al-Bukhārī and Muslim, except that al-Sabīʿī practised tadlīs and later became confused. However, Sufyān—meaning al-Thawrī—narrated from him before that confusion. And Allah knows best.
Then I found the hadith in al-Ṭabarānī’s al-Muʿjam al-Awsaṭ, no. 2270 in my numbering. He cited it in the biographical entry of Aḥmad ibn Zuhayr al-Tustarī, from whom he narrated more than one hundred and fifty hadiths in it (1/111/1–121/1), nos. 2229–2384. Thus, he was one of his well-known teachers, though I did not find a biographical notice for him. I then found him mentioned in al-Dhahabī’s Tadhkirat al-Ḥuffāẓ, where he described him as “the hadith master, the authoritative scholar, one of the eminent figures …” Zuhayr was his grandfather, while his father’s name was Yaḥyā.
