- “When you cast the pebbles at the Jamarāt, it will be a light for you on the Day of Resurrection.”
Al-Bazzār recorded it (p. 113 of his Zawāʾid): Ibrāhīm ibn Saʿīd al-Jawharī narrated to us; Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us; Ibn Abī al-Zinād narrated to us, from Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah, from Ṣāliḥ, the freedman of al-Tawʾamah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said this hadith. He added: “We know of no connected chain from Ibn ʿAbbās for it except through this route.”
I say: Al-Ḥāfiẓ said immediately afterward: “I say: Its chain of transmission is good, because Mūsā heard from Ṣāliḥ before the latter’s memory deteriorated.” I say: This is an important point that is not found in this form in the biographical works on narrators. They mention that Ṣāliḥ became confused in his later years, and that Ibn Abī Dhiʾb, Ibn Jurayj, and Ziyād ibn Saʿd heard from him before this deterioration; but they do not include Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah among them, though he deserves to be included. He died in 141 AH, about ten years before them, and even more than that before some of them.
Al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Mundhirī overlooked this point, for in al-Targhīb (2/131) he indicated that the hadith was defective on account of Ṣāliḥ, the freedman of al-Tawʾamah. Al-Haythamī stated this explicitly, saying in Majmaʿ al-Zawāʾid (3/260): “Al-Bazzār narrated it, and its chain includes Ṣāliḥ, the freedman of al-Tawʾamah, who is weak.”
