Silsilat al-Ahadith al-SahihahNasir al-Din al-Albani

As for its legal interpretation, the scholars have differed over whether tanning renders a hide pure. The majority hold that it does. They also differed over how to reconcile the hadith under discussion. The soundest view is that an ihāb is a hide that has not been tanned, and it is this that is forbidden; once it has been tanned, it becomes pure. Whoever wishes further detail may consult Nayl al-Awṭār and other works.
