two days after that meeting. After all the people had left the gathering I had held at the home of one of them in Jabal al-Nasr, and only a few of the close brothers remained, the discussion began. They then heard from him astonishing statements and strange contradictions. On the one hand, he complained to them that I was shunning him, saying that he warmly welcomed me and boasting in gatherings that I was his teacher; yet, on the other hand, when a scholarly discussion took place between him and me, he openly declared me misguided and said that he too was shunning me! The brothers said to him, “How can this be, when you are complaining that he is shunning you?!” But he did not answer their question; rather, he diverted into another aspect of the matter.
In short, those present came to see his self-admiration in his own opinion, his persistence in it, his transgression against the one whom he claimed was his teacher, and his certainty that he was misguided. Allah is the One whose help is sought. When he was asked, “Is this opinion of yours revelation from Heaven? Could it not be mistaken?” he replied, “Yes.” When he was then asked, “How, then, can you be certain that your opponent is misguided, when it is possible that the truth is with him?” he could find no answer. Instead, he resumed arguing in a raised voice. When reminded of this, he said, “Excuse me; I told you that this is my habit! Do not blame me!”
Some of those present then demanded proof for the infallibility he claimed. He recited the Verse of Purification: “Allah only intends to remove from you all impurity, O People of the Household, and to purify you completely.” He was asked, “Is the will in this verse legislative or creational?” He answered, “Creational.” They said, “That would entail that Fatimah’s children are also infallible!” He replied, “Yes.” He was asked, “And their children’s children?” At that, he shouted and fled from answering. It was clear from his words that he held all the Prophet’s Household to be infallible until the Day they are resurrected, though he did not state this openly because of how repugnant it was.
The owner of the house then rose, brought a treatise by Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, and read from it an important section explaining the difference between the legislative will and the creational will. The former is His, exalted is He, love and pleasure with what He has willed of faith and action
