in the Two Sahihs, through another chain from al-Baraʾ, in another hadith narrated by him, with the wording: “We were commanded to do seven things...” He mentioned it among them.
Muslim (6/135) also mentions in one of his narrations: “and calling out for the lost.” This is how it appears there, though it may perhaps read: “and guiding.”
- As for the hadith of Ibn Abbas, Ibn Abi Layla narrates it from Dawud ibn Ali, from his father, from his grandfather Abdullah ibn Abbas, with the wording: “Return the greeting, lower the gaze, show the way, and help with the loads.” Al-Bazzar narrated it (2019) and said: “We know of no route for Ibn Abbas other than this one. It has been narrated from others in various wordings, but we know of no hadith containing the phrase, ‘help with the loads,’ except this one. Dawud is not strong in hadith, though nothing is attributed to him but honesty; only those of his reports which no one else has narrated are recorded.”
I say: Ibn Abi Layla—namely, Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman—had poor retention, and al-Haythami criticized it because of him. This is also what al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said, following the foregoing discussion, in Zawaʾid al-Bazzar (2/211).
- As for the hadith of Sahl, Abu Maʿshar narrates it: Abu Bakr ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Ansari narrated to us from him, similarly, with the wording: “They said, ‘What are the rights of gatherings?’ He said, ‘Remember Allah often, show the way, and lower your gazes.’” Al-Tabarani narrated it in al-Muʿjam al-Kabir (6/105/5592).
