Sulayman al-Taymi narrated from Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir, with the same wording. I say: This is a good chain of transmission, were it not for the fact that I do not know this al-Thaqafi. Ibn Hibban declared Surur trustworthy (6/437 and 8/301). Abu Hatim said: “A shaykh,” and Ibn Saʿd said: “Well known.” See Taysir al-Intifaʿ. This hadith has previously appeared under no. 1027; it has been repeated here for further verification.
Al-Haythami (8/157), following al-Mundhiri (3/84–85), said: “Ahmad narrated it with a good chain of transmission, as did al-Bazzar and al-Tabarani in al-Awsat.” This is what they said, although you have learned that Ahmad’s chain includes ʿAli ibn Zayd ibn Judʿan, who is weak due to his poor retention. Nor did they say anything about al-Bazzar’s other chain of transmission! Al-Aʿzami merely copied them, as is his habit! Nevertheless, the hadith is authentic, for it has numerous supporting reports, some of which have preceded under nos. 294–296.

Imam Ahmad recorded it in al-Musnad (3/112): Ismaʿil narrated to us; Ayyub informed us from ʿAmr ibn Saʿid, from Anas ibn Malik, who said: I never saw anyone more merciful toward children than the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. Ibrahim was being nursed in the outskirts of Medina, and he would go there, and we would go with him. He would enter the house, which was full of smoke—for Ibrahim’s foster father was a blacksmith—
