—concerning whom it states in al-Jarh wa al-Taʿdil (3/1/74): “He narrated from Anas, and Yahya ibn ʿAbdullah al-Jabir, Jabir al-Juʿfi, Qatari al-Khashshab, Abu Hashim, and Salamah ibn Raja narrated from him.” My father said: “He was a shaykh.” Ibn Hibban included him in al-Thiqat (5/130), through the narration of Mukhtar ibn Abi Mukhtar from him. As for al-Daraqutni, he graded him weak, as stated in al-Mizan. I have not seen anyone mention that he was among the narrators of the Sahih. Perhaps al-Haythami confused him with ʿAbd al-Warith ibn Saʿid al-Tamimi al-ʿAnbari, their freedman, who was a narrator of the two Sahihs. However, he narrates from Anas through the intermediary of ʿAbd al-ʿAziz ibn Suhayb and others. And Allah knows best.

As for the hadith of Abu Saʿid al-Khudri, Fudayl ibn Marzuq narrates it from ʿAtiyyah, from him, attributed to the Prophet, with similar wording, though without mentioning the decrepit old man. It was transmitted by al-Baghawi in Hadith Ibn al-Jaʿd (fol. 94/1), as well as by al-Bazzar, who said: “We know of no narration of it from Abu Saʿid except through Fudayl, and ʿAtiyyah is weak.”

The Lord, exalted is He, will say, ‘If I commanded you to do something, would you obey Me?’ They will reply, ‘Yes, by Your might.’ He will say, ‘Go and enter the Fire. Had they entered it, it would not have harmed them.’ Then bursts of flame will come forth against them, and they will think that they have destroyed everything Allah created. So they will hasten back and say, ‘We set out, our Lord, intending to enter it, but bursts of flame came forth against us, and we thought that they had destroyed everything Allah created.’ He will command them a second time, and they will turn back in the same manner, saying the same words. Then Allah, exalted is He, will say, ‘Before I created you, I knew what you would do and that you would ultimately come to
