for such words do women an injustice and belittle them, even though—as you have learned—they are the counterparts of men.
We ask Allah, exalted be He, to grant us fairness and moderation in all our affairs.
179 – “There is no obedience to any person if it entails disobedience to Allah.”
Aḥmad narrated it (5/66) from ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Ṣāmit, who said:
“Ziyād wanted to dispatch ʿImrān ibn Ḥuṣayn to govern Khurāsān, but he refused. His companions said to him, ‘You turned down Khurāsān—why will you not take charge of it?’ He replied, ‘By Allah, it would not please me to bear its burning heat while you enjoy its coolness. I also fear that when I am facing the enemy a letter might come to me from Ziyād: if I press on I will be destroyed, and if I turn back my neck will be struck.’ Ziyād then looked to al-Ḥakam ibn ʿAmr al-Ghifārī for the post, and he accepted the appointment. ʿImrān said, ‘Will someone summon al-Ḥakam for me?’ A messenger went, al-Ḥakam came, and upon entering ʿImrān said to him, ‘Did you hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say…’—and he mentioned the statement. Al-Ḥakam replied, ‘Yes.’ ʿImrān then exclaimed, ‘Praise be to Allah,’ or, ‘Allāhu akbar.’
I say: its chain is authentic according to the criteria of Muslim, and al-Ḥāfiẓ (Ibn Ḥajar) judged it strong in Fatḥ (13/109). Al-Ṭabarānī also narrated only the Prophetic portion of it in al-Kabīr (1/154/2) with this wording.
It has another route recorded by al-Ṭayālisī (856), Aḥmad (4/432; 5/66), and al-Ṭabarānī (1/155) through chains from Muḥammad, who said:
“A man came to ʿImrān ibn Ḥuṣayn while we were with him and said, ‘Al-Ḥakam ibn ʿAmr al-Ghifārī has been appointed over Khurāsān.’ ʿImrān longed for it until someone in the gathering said to him, ‘Shall we pray for you?’ He replied, ‘No.’ Then ʿImrān arose, met him among the people, and said, ‘You have been entrusted with a matter of the Muslims…’”
