2464 — “Every mountain pass in Mecca is a route and a place of sacrifice.”
An authentic hadith, narrated from Jabir ibn ʿAbd Allah, Jubayr ibn Mutʿim, and ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAbbas.
- As for the hadith of Jabir, Usamah ibn Zayd narrates it from ʿAta ibn Abi Rabah, who told him that he heard Jabir ibn ʿAbd Allah say: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said it. Abu Dawud (1917), al-Darimi (2/156–157), Ibn Majah (3048), al-Tahawi in Mushkil al-Athar (2/73), al-Hakim (1/460), al-Bayhaqi (5/239), and Ahmad (3/326) all narrated it through various chains from Usamah, with this wording.
Al-Hakim said: “Authentic according to the criteria of Muslim,” and al-Dhahabi concurred. I say: Rather, it is only good, because Usamah—al-Laythi, their client—although one of Muslim’s narrators, was criticized by some on account of his memory, while others declared him trustworthy. Among the latter was the well-known hadith master Yaʿqub ibn Sufyan. Al-Bayhaqi narrated from him that he said after the hadith: “Usamah ibn Zayd is, according to the people of his city, Medina, trustworthy and dependable.”
I say: That is, the people of his city know him better than others. Nevertheless, he is not altogether free of weakness. Al-Hafiz indicated this when he said in al-Taqrib: “Truthful, but makes mistakes.”
- As for the hadith of Jubayr, Saʿid ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz narrates it, saying: Sulayman ibn Musa narrated to me from him, attributed to the Prophet, with the same wording except for the word “roads.” Ibn Hibban (1008) and Ahmad (4/82) narrated it. I say: This chain is unobjectionable as supporting evidence, for its narrators are trustworthy narrators of Muslim, apart from
