I say: Its narrators are trustworthy and are among the narrators of the two Shaykhs, except that Layth—namely, Ibn Saʿd the Egyptian—was born more than ten years after the death of ʿAbdullah ibn Shaddad—namely, Ibn al-Had al-Laythi of Medina.
2446 — “O clan of Bayadah, marry Abu Hind, and seek his daughters’ hands in marriage. He was a cupper.”
It was recorded by al-Bukhari in al-Tarikh (1/1/268/861), Abu Dawud (2102), Ibn Hibban (1249), al-Hakim (2/164), Ibn ʿAdi (77/2), and Ibn al-Aʿrabi in his Muʿjam (214/1), through the route of Hammad ibn Salamah: Muhammad ibn ʿAmr related to us, from Abu Salamah, from Abu Hurayrah, that Abu Hind cupped the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, on the crown of his head, whereupon the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: … Then he mentioned it.
I say: This is a good chain of transmission. Al-Hakim declared it authentic, though that judgment is open to question, as I have explained in earlier places, including hadith 760. His words, “Marry Abu Hind,” mean: marry your daughters to him. And, “seek his daughters’ hands in marriage,” means: ask to marry his daughters, and do not cause him to leave your community because of his cupping profession. Thus stated in ʿAwn al-Maʿbud.
2447 — “A mudd suffices for minor ablution, and a saʿ for the ritual bath.”
It has been narrated on the authority of ʿAqil ibn Abi Talib, Jabir ibn ʿAbdullah, Anas ibn Malik, and ʿAbdullah ibn ʿAbbas.
- As for the hadith of ʿAqil, it is narrated by Juban ibn ʿAli, from Yazid ibn Abi Ziyad, from ʿAbdullah ibn
