“When you travel … and when you halt overnight, avoid the road, for at night it is the refuge of creeping creatures.” Muslim (6/54) and others transmitted it. See the earlier number (1357). As for the other half, it has many corroborating reports from Abu Hurayrah and others; see al-Targhib (1/82–83).
2434 — “There is no good in one who does not offer hospitality.”
Ahmad (4/155) transmitted it: Hajjaj and Hasan ibn Musa narrated to us; they said: Ibn Lahi'ah narrated to us, from Yazid ibn Abi Habib, from Abu al-Khayr, from 'Uqbah ibn 'Amir, as a report attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. I say: The narrators of this chain are trustworthy and are narrators of the two Sahihs, apart from Ibn Lahi'ah, who is weak due to his poor retention. Al-Haythami identified this as its defect, and al-Manawi concurred with him.
I say: However, al-Ruyani transmitted it in his Musnad (fol. 42/2) through Ibn Wahb, from Ibn Lahi'ah, with this chain. Reports of Ibn Lahi'ah narrated by 'Abd Allah ibn Wahb are authentic, because he narrated from him before his retention deteriorated, as some leading scholars have established, as explained in his biographical notice. Thus, the hadith is authentic through this transmission, and all praise is due to Allah.
2435 — “There is no staying up at night except for one praying or a traveller.”
Al-Tayalisi (1/73/294) transmitted it: Shu'bah narrated to us; Mansur informed me; I heard Khaythamah ibn 'Abd al-Rahman narrating from 'Abd Allah, as a report attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
