However, he was not alone in narrating it. Ibn Hibban also transmitted it (1872) from Muhammad ibn Abi ‘Ubaydah ibn Ma‘n—from his father—from al-A‘mash, with the same chain. (The original reads “from” instead of “ibn,” which is an error.) I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission according to Muslim’s criteria. Abu ‘Ubaydah’s name was ‘Abd al-Malik ibn Ma‘n ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn Mas‘ud al-Kufi.
2430 — “The Hour will not come until no one makes pilgrimage to the House.”
Abu Ya‘la transmitted it in his Musnad (65/2): Abu Khaythamah narrated to us; Yahya narrated to us from Shu‘bah; Qatadah narrated to me from ‘Abd Allah ibn Abi ‘Utbah, from Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri, attributed to the Prophet. Ibn Hibban (1884) and al-Hakim (4/453) also transmitted it by way of Abu Ya‘la, through two other routes from Shu‘bah.
I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission according to the criteria of al-Bukhari and Muslim, as al-Hakim stated, and al-Dhahabi concurred with him. ‘Abd Allah ibn Abi ‘Utbah was the Basran Anṣari and a freedman of Anas. Abu Khaythamah’s name was Zuhayr ibn Harb, and Shu‘bah was ibn al-Hajjaj.
Al-Hajjaj ibn al-Hajjaj differed from him, narrating it from Qatadah with the same chain, but with the following wording in its text: “Pilgrimage to the House and ‘umrah will surely be performed after the emergence of Gog and Magog.” Al-Bukhari transmitted it (1/403) and said: “Aban and ‘Imran corroborated him in narrating it from Qatadah. ‘Abd al-Rahman narrated from Shu‘bah: ‘The Hour will not come until no one makes pilgrimage to the House.’ The former is more widely transmitted.”
