I say: This is also an authentic chain of transmission. Its narrators are trustworthy and are among the narrators of the two Shaykhs, apart from Ibn Badhimah and Hubtar; both are trustworthy. Abu Jamrah also corroborated it from Ibn ‘Abbas with the same report, except for the words, “Prepare fermented drinks …,” etc. It was transmitted by al-Bukhari (10/463—Fath al-Bari), Muslim (1/35), and Abu Dawud, who added: “and glazed earthenware jars.”
Abu Dawud also transmitted it from Abu Hurayrah, similar to the hadith of Abu Jamrah, adding: “and do not drink from a waterskin whose mouth has been folded over; rather, drink from your own waterskin and tie it securely.” Its chain of transmission is authentic.
Muslim (1/37) and Ahmad (3/57) transmitted, in the account of this delegation of ‘Abd al-Qays, that he, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Do not drink from a hollowed tree trunk.” They said: “O Prophet of Allah, may Allah make me your ransom! Do you know what a hollowed tree trunk is?” He said: “Yes: a trunk whose middle has been hollowed out. Nor drink from a gourd vessel or glazed earthenware jars; rather, use tightly sealed waterskins.”
Abu Dawud also transmitted it from Abu al-Qamus Zayd ibn ‘Ali, who said: A man from the delegation of ‘Abd al-Qays that came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, narrated to me: “Do not drink from a hollowed tree trunk, a pitch-coated vessel, a gourd vessel, or glazed earthenware jars. Drink instead from a waterskin whose mouth is securely tied. If it becomes strong, dilute it with water; and if it still proves too strong for you, pour it out.” Its chain of transmission is authentic. Ahmad (4/206) transmitted it up to the words, “whose mouth is securely tied.” This portion also has another chain of transmission in Ahmad (3/432 and 4/206).
Furthermore, ‘Ali ibn Badhimah was corroborated by ‘Abd al-Karim—al-Jazari—from Qays ibn Hubtar, with the final statement alone in the following wording:
