177 — “He forbade,” and in another wording: “He sternly rebuked,” “drinking while standing.”
Muslim (6/110), Abū Dāwūd (no. 3717), al-Tirmidhī (3/111), al-Dārimī (2/120-121), Ibn Mājah (2/338), al-Ṭaḥāwī in Sharḥ al-Maʿānī (2/357) and in al-Mushkil (3/18), al-Ṭayālisī (2/332), Aḥmad (3/118, 131, 147, 199, 214, 250, 277, 291), Abū Yaʿlā (2/156, 158, 159), and al-Ḍiyāʾ in al-Mukhtārah (2/205) all record it through the chain of Qatādah from Anas, ascribed to the Prophet ﷺ. The last two sources add the words: “and eating while standing.”
That addition passes through Maṭar al-Warrāq, who is weak, and it is contradicted, for in the version of Muslim and others Qatādah said: “So we asked him, ‘And what about eating?’ He replied, ‘That is even worse and more repugnant.’” Hence, the addition in those two reports is an interpolation.
Qatādah relates the report through two further chains:
-
Via Abū ʿĪsā al-Aswārī from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, with the second wording; Muslim and al-Ṭaḥāwī transmitted it.
-
Via Abū Muslim al-Judhamī from al-Jārūd ibn al-ʿAlāʾ (may Allah be pleased with him); al-Ṭaḥāwī and al-Tirmidhī transmitted it, and al-Tirmidhī said: “A good and singular ḥadith.”
It is also supported by a narration of Abū Hurayrah to the same effect, recorded by Aḥmad (2/327) and al-Ṭaḥāwī with a sound chain, and by another narration of Jābir with a similar wording.
