Ibn Jabir—whose name was ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Yazid ibn Jabir al-Azdi al-Darani—that he narrated from al-Qasim ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman. Perhaps one of the narrators or copyists erred and mentioned “‘Abd Allah” in place of “al-Qasim.” And Allah knows best.
The account is authentic. Al-Tabarani transmitted it through several routes from Ibn Mas‘ud, with similar wordings, but none of them contains the phrase, “except with the Quran and remembrance.” Abu Dawud, al-Nasa’i, Ahmad, and others also transmitted it. However, one narration recorded by al-Nasa’i, through the route of al-Zubayr ibn ‘Adi, from Kulthum, from Ibn Mas‘ud, has the wording: “Allah has introduced a new ruling concerning the prayer: do not speak, except in remembrance of Allah and what is appropriate for you, and stand before Allah in devout obedience.” Its chain of transmission is authentic, as I have explained in Sahih Abi Dawud (857). It is thus a strong supporting report for the addition found in al-Tabarani’s route.
It has another supporting report in the hadith of Mu‘awiyah ibn al-Hakam al-Sulami, attributed to the Prophet, with the wording: “Nothing of ordinary human speech is permissible in this prayer; rather, it consists only of glorifying Allah, declaring His greatness, and reciting the Quran.” Muslim, Abu Dawud, and other compilers of the Sunan recorded it. It is also cited in Sahih Abi Dawud (862).
- “Fire entails no liability.”
Abu Dawud (4594), al-Nasa’i, in “Loans and Deposits” in al-Sunan al-Kubra (10/1), and Ibn Majah (2676) recorded it through three routes from ‘Abd al-Razzaq, from Ma‘mar, from Hammam ibn
