He also transmitted it by another route from Salih: “Al-Jufayshish narrated to us.” Thus, he explicitly stated that al-Jufayshish narrated it to him, as in Ibn Mandah’s version. Al-Hafiz said in al-Isabah: “This is an error, for he did not meet him. The original version of the hadith is in Musnad Ahmad, through the narration of Muslim ibn Haysam from al-Ashʿath, who said: ‘I came to the Messenger of Allah in a group from Kindah,’ and he did not mention al-Jufayshish.”
I say: It is found in al-Musnad (5/211 and 212), al-Bukhari’s al-Tarikh al-Kabir (4/1/274), al-Tarikh al-Saghir as well (p. 7), Ibn Saʿd’s al-Tabaqat (1/23), and Ibn Majah (2/131–132), through ʿAqil ibn Talhah al-Sulami, from Muslim ibn Haysam, with the same report. Al-Busiri said in al-Zawaʾid (1/162): “Its chain of transmission is authentic, and its narrators are trustworthy.” And it is as he said. Ibn Saʿd also transmitted it (1/22) from al-Zuhri as a mursal report, with an authentic mursal chain.
- “An angel descended from heaven, declaring him—the one who had insulted Abu Bakr—to be lying in what he said to you. But when you retaliated, Satan appeared, and I could not remain seated once Satan had appeared.”
Abu Dawud transmitted it (2/300) through Bashir ibn al-Muharrir, from Saʿid ibn al-Musayyib, who said: “While the Messenger of Allah was sitting with his Companions, a man insulted Abu Bakr and harmed him. Abu Bakr remained silent. Then he harmed him a second time, and Abu Bakr remained silent. Then he harmed him a third time, whereupon Abu Bakr retaliated against him. The Messenger of Allah then stood up when Abu Bakr retaliated. Abu Bakr said: ‘Are you displeased with me, O Messenger of Allah?’ The Messenger of Allah said: …” Then he cited it.
