- “One who dies from pleurisy is a martyr.”
Ahmad (4/157) and al-Ruyani in his Musnad (9/48/2) transmitted it through Ibn Lahiʿah, who said: Wahb ibn ʿAbd Allah al-Maʿafiri informed us, from ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Shimāsah, from ʿUqbah, as a report attributed to the Prophet.
I say: This chain of transmission is acceptable as corroborative evidence. Its narrators are trustworthy, except that Ibn Lahiʿah had a poor memory. However, the hadith has a supporting report from Jabir ibn ʿAtik and another from Abu Hurayrah, both of which are cited in Ahkam al-Janaʾiz (pp. 39 and 40).
- “Remove harmful objects from the Muslims’ path.”
Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah transmitted it in al-Adab (1/149/1): Wakiʿ narrated to us, from Aban ibn Sumʿah, from Abu al-Waziʿ, from Abu Barzah, who said: I said, “O Messenger of Allah, direct me to a deed from which I may benefit.” He then mentioned the above.
Through Ibn Abi Shaybah, it was also transmitted by Abu Yaʿla in his Musnad (343/2—Maktab facsimile) and by al-Diyaʾ in al-Muntaqa min al-Ahadith al-Sihah wa al-Hisan (280/1). He said: “Muslim transmitted it with a similar meaning.”
I say: It is found in Muslim (8/34–35), through Yahya ibn Saʿid, from Aban ibn Sumʿah, with the wording: “Set aside the harmful object …” Ahmad also transmitted it (4/420), saying: Yahya ibn Saʿid narrated to us with it. Then he said (4/423): Wakiʿ narrated to us with it, using Yahya’s wording.
