Muslim (2/165) and al-Bayhaqi (2/486–487) narrated it with a connected chain from her. Ibn Abi Shaybah also narrated it in al-Musannaf (2/273) from Abu Salamah as a mursal report. Its chain is authentic.
- “The proper length of the waist-wrapper is midway down the shins, at the calf muscle. If you insist, then below the shins; but it has no place at the ankles.”
Al-Tirmidhi (1784), al-Nasa’i (2/99), Ibn Majah (2/371), Ibn Hibban (1447), and Ahmad (5/382, 396, 398, and 400) narrated it through several routes from Abu Ishaq, from Muslim ibn Nadhir, from Hudhayfah, who attributed it to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. Al-Tirmidhi said: “A good, authentic hadith. Al-Thawri and Shuʿbah narrated it from Abu Ishaq.”
I say: It is as he said. Both of them narrated from him before his memory became impaired, and Shuʿbah narrated from him only what he explicitly stated as having directly heard, as mentioned in his biographical notice. Thus, through his narration from him, we are safe from the suspicion of concealment in transmission. Praise be to Allah for His enabling grace.
It also has a brief supporting report, narrated by Salam ibn Abi Mutiʿ from Qatadah, from al-Hasan, from Samurah, who attributed it to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, with the wording: “The proper length of the waist-wrapper is halfway down the shin, and the waist-wrapper has no place at the ankles.” Abu Nuʿaym narrated it in al-Hilyah (6/191) and said: “It is singular through the transmission of Qatadah and Salam.”
I say: Salam is trustworthy, but he is weak specifically in his narrations from Qatadah, as al-Hafiz stated in al-Taqrib. It has many supporting reports, reference to which has already been made in the fourth volume; among them, we cited there the hadith
