Yet I did not find this wording in it. Rather, he narrated it with the wording: “He receives nothing,” as was indicated earlier at the beginning of this documentation. Hence the need for this note.
- “Whoever unjustly strikes his slave, retaliation will be exacted from him on the Day of Resurrection.”
Abu Nuʿaym narrated it in Al-Ḥilyah (4/378): Sulayman ibn Ahmad reported to us; Muhammad ibn ʿUthman ibn Abi Shaybah reported to us; Furat ibn Mahbub reported to us; al-Ashjaʿi reported to us, from Sufyan, from Habib ibn Abi Thabit, from Maymun ibn Abi Shabib, from ʿAmmar ibn Yasir, tracing it back to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. He said: “It is singular among the narrations of al-Thawri and Habib; no one narrated it from him in a well-preserved form except al-Ashjaʿi.”
I say: His name was ʿUbayd Allah ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman al-Kufi, and he was the most dependable of people in transmitting al-Thawri’s written material. The narrators above him are trustworthy and are among the narrators of the two Shaykhs, except Maymun ibn Abi Shabib, who is trustworthy. However, Ibn Abi Thabit practised tadlis and narrated it with the ambiguous wording “from,” and this is a defect. As for Furat ibn Mahbub, I found no one who declared him trustworthy apart from Ibn Hibban (9/13). Yet Ibn Abi Hatim said (3/2/80): “Abu Zurʿah narrated from him.” I say: He narrated only from a trustworthy narrator, but he was contradicted, as will follow. Muhammad ibn ʿUthman ibn Abi Shaybah is somewhat weak.
As for al-Mundhiri, he said (3/161): “Al-Tabarani narrated it, and its narrators are trustworthy.” Then I found the hadith in al-Bukhari’s Al-Adab al-Mufrad (181), where he said: Muhammad ibn
