“It was narrated by Abu Yaʿla and al-Bazzar, and its chain of transmission includes ʿAbd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn ʿAqil, who is weak due to his poor retention.”
I therefore consulted Zawaʾid al-Bazzar and found the hadith at the beginning of the “Book of Faith” (p. 2), through ʿAbd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn ʿAqil, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, ... the hadith. There is a blank in the original here, so I was unable to ascertain whether the hadith was narrated on the authority of ʿUmar or of his son, ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUmar. The former seems more likely to me, since I did not find this hadith narrated from Ibn ʿUmar in any other source. Rather, I found it in al-Majmaʿ (1/32), also narrated by al-Tabarani in al-Awsat from ʿUmar. He said: “It includes Hajjaj ibn Nusayr, whom the majority have declared weak.”
The well-known account of ʿUmar and Abu Hurayra concerning the Prophet’s command, peace and blessings be upon him, that Abu Hurayra give the people the glad tidings contained in this hadith—and ʿUmar’s saying to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, “Then do not do so, for I fear that they will rely upon it; let them continue to act,” and the Prophet’s reply, peace and blessings be upon him, “Then let them”—is authentically established in Sahih Muslim (1/44–45) and elsewhere. Thus, it is most likely that ʿUmar is the Companion who narrated this hadith. And Allah knows best.
I then became certain of this after Kashf al-Astar ʿan Zawaʾid al-Bazzar was published, for it contains it (1/12/9), from Ibn ʿAqil, from Ibn ʿUmar, from ʿUmar. I say: Its chain is good and authentic in light of the preceding evidence. There are many well-known hadiths with the same meaning; one of them will come shortly under the hadith of Jabir and others (2355).
2345 — “Whoever brandishes his sword and then lays it down, his blood is forfeit.”
Al-Nasaʾi (2/174), al-Hakim (2/159), and Abu Nuʿaym (4/21) narrated it through Maʿmar ibn Rashid, from ʿAbd Allah ibn Tawus, from his father, from Ibn al-Zubayr, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said—and he cited it. Al-Hakim said:
