Silsilat al-Ahadith al-SahihahNasir al-Din al-Albani

Abū Nuʿaym recorded it in Akhbār Iṣfahān (1/123), through Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Shaʿrānī, from Isḥāq. As for Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Malik—Abū Jābir al-Azdī al-Baṣrī—Abū Ḥātim said: “I met him, and he was not strong.” Ibn Ḥibbān listed him in al-Thiqāt (9/64) (1). As for Isḥāq ibn Sayyār—al-Naṣībī, Abū Yaʿqūb—Ibn Abī Ḥātim said (1/1/223): “We met him, and he wrote to me some of his hadith. He was truthful and trustworthy.”

Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Shaʿrānī was Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar, the ascetic camel-dealer. In his biographical notice, Abū Nuʿaym cited this hadith and said: “He was one of the worshippers eager to perform Hajj, and he would pray two rakʿahs at every mile!”

I say: This prayer is a blameworthy innovation, which was not practiced by the righteous predecessors, nor by their leader, the Master of the Prophets (peace and blessings be upon him), for “the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad.” He did not mention any criticism or accreditation concerning him, so the man’s reliability is unknown. In sum, the hadith is good in my view by virtue of its two routes, particularly since a supporting narration with similar wording has already preceded; see no. 636.

2331 — “Whoever shouts to spur on the horses on the day of a race for stakes is not of us.”

Al-Ṭabarānī recorded it in al-Kabīr (3/126/2): Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥaḍramī narrated to us; Ḍirār ibn Ṣurad, Abū Nuʿaym, reported to us; ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Muḥammad reported to us, from Thawr ibn Zayd, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, traced back to the Prophet.

(1) He is given a biographical entry in al-Mizan, Lisan al-Mizan, and al-Tahdhib as well—contrary to the compiler's usual practice of not including in Lisan al-Mizan anyone whom he had already included in al-Tahdhib. In the latter, he marked him with the symbol “M,” which I believe to be an error. He did not include him in al-Taqrib. End quote.
