I say:
Ismāʿīl is weak, as stated in al-Taqrīb. However, he was corroborated by Abū Ḥamzah, from ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿUmayr, with the same report. Al-Bayhaqī recorded it through al-Ḥākim’s chain of transmission: Muḥammad ibn Mūsā ibn Ḥātim narrated to us; ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥasan ibn Shuqayq narrated to us; Abū Ḥamzah narrated to us.
I say: Abū Ḥamzah—namely, Muḥammad ibn Maymūn al-Sukkarī—was trustworthy and among the narrators relied upon by the two Shaykhs, as were those above him in the chain, except for Muḥammad ibn Mūsā ibn Ḥātim, concerning whom criticism has been made. Al-Qāsim al-Sayyārī said: “I disclaim responsibility for him.” Ibn Abī Saʿd said: “Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī al-Ḥāfiẓ held an unfavorable opinion of him.”
Qays ibn al-Rabīʿ also corroborated him, from ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿUmayr, with the same report. Al-Būṣīrī mentioned it without attributing it to a source, and I think he meant what Aḥmad recorded (1/190): Qays ibn al-Rabīʿ narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿUmayr narrated to us, from ʿAmr ibn Ḥurayth, who said: “I came to Medina and divided property with my brother. Saʿīd ibn Zayd then said: ‘The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: No blessing is granted in the price of land or a house unless it is invested in land or a house.’”
I say: Thus you see that Qays ibn al-Rabīʿ made it a hadith of Saʿīd ibn Zayd, rather than a hadith of Saʿīd ibn Ḥurayth. This was perhaps due to the poor memory for which he was declared weak.
It has also been narrated through another route from ʿAmr ibn Ḥurayth, attributed to the Prophet, but its chain of transmission is very weak. Ibn Abī Ḥātim said (2/324): “I asked my father about a hadith narrated by ʿUqbah ibn Khālid, from al-Ṣabāḥ ibn Yaḥyā, from Khālid ibn Abī Umayyah, from ʿAmr ibn Ḥurayth”—and he mentioned it. My father said: “They narrate it from ʿAmr ibn Ḥurayth, from his brother Saʿīd ibn Ḥurayth.”
