where he does not expect.” (1)
On this occasion, I advise readers to refer to the treatise by our virtuous brother, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ʿAbd al-Khāliq, The Decisive Word on Deferred-Payment Sales. It is unique in its field and beneficial in its subject matter. May Allah reward him خيرًا.
2327 — “Whoever sells a house and does not use its price to acquire a similar one will not be blessed in it.”
Al-Bukhārī recorded it in al-Tārīkh (4/2/328), as did Ibn Mājah (2/97), al-Ṭayālisī (1/263), and Ibn ʿAdī (358/1), through Yūsuf ibn Maymūn, from Abū ʿUbaydah ibn Ḥudhayfah, from his father, Ḥudhayfah ibn al-Yamān, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said it.
I say: This chain of transmission is weak. Yūsuf ibn Maymūn—al-Makhzūmī, their client, the Kufan dyer—is weak. Nevertheless, Ibn ʿAdī said: “I see nothing wrong with this hadith.”
I say: Perhaps this was because Yazīd ibn Abī Khālid al-Dālānī corroborated him in reporting it from Abū ʿUbaydah. Al-Bukhārī also recorded it, as did al-Ṭayālisī and al-Bayhaqī (6/33). This Yazīd—Abū Khālid al-Dālānī—is among the narrators covered in al-Tahdhīb. Al-Ḥāfiẓ said: “He was truthful, made many errors, and practiced concealment in transmission.” Al-Būṣīrī did not recognize him in his Zawāʾid, and said (155/1): “I do not know of any attestation of reliability or criticism concerning Yazīd ibn Abī Khālid.”
I say: The reason for this is that he attributed it only to al-Bayhaqī, where it appears as: “Yazīd ibn Abī Khālid”
