“Its chain of transmission is authentic.” I say: ʿAṭāʾ had become confused in his later years, and Jarīr heard from him during that period; nevertheless, it is strengthened by what preceded it. And Allah knows best.
2324 — “If any of your rulers commands you to commit a sin, do not obey him.”
It was reported by Ibn Mājah (2/201–202), Ibn Ḥibbān (1552), and Aḥmad (3/67), through Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr, from ʿUmar ibn al-Ḥakam ibn Thawbān, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, who said:
“The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent ʿAlqamah ibn Mujazziz in command of a military expedition, and I was among them. When he reached the head of his expedition—or was at some point along the way—a group from the army asked his permission, and he permitted them to leave. He appointed ʿAbdullāh ibn Ḥudhāfah ibn Qays al-Sahmī over them, and I was among those who went on campaign with him.
“While they were on the way, the people lit a fire to warm themselves or to cook some food on it. Then ʿAbdullāh—who had a playful disposition—said: ‘Do I not have the right to be heard and obeyed by you?’ They said: ‘Yes.’ He said: ‘Is there anything I command you to do that you will not do?’ They said: ‘No.’ He said: ‘Then I solemnly order you to leap into this fire!’ Some people rose and tucked up their garments. When he thought that they were about to leap in, he said: ‘Hold yourselves back! I was only joking with you.’
“When we returned, they mentioned that to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ...” He then cited the hadith. Al-Ḥākim (3/630) also reported part of its opening. I say: Its chain of transmission is good.
2325 — “Whoever leads people in prayer while they dislike him, his prayer does not rise beyond his collarbone.”
Ibn ʿAsākir (4/15/2) narrated it from Abū Bakr al-Hudhalī, from Shahr ibn Ḥawshab, from Abū ʿAbdullāh al-Ṣunābiḥī:
