2317 — “Whoever commits a sin for which the fixed legal penalty is carried out, it is an expiation for that sin.”
Al-Bukhari transmitted it in al-Tarikh (2/1/189), and Ahmad (5/214, 215), from Usamah ibn Zayd, from Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir, from Khuzaymah ibn Thabit, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. I say: Its chain is good, and its narrators are trustworthy according to Muslim’s criteria. There is, however, well-known criticism concerning Usamah ibn Zayd—the Medinan al-Laythi—but it does not lower his hadith beneath the rank of good. The hadith is authentic, for it has a corroborating report from the hadith of Ubadah ibn al-Samit, attributed to the Prophet with similar wording. It was transmitted by Ahmad (5/316, 320), al-Bukhari and Muslim, and others. It also has another corroborating report from Ali with similar wording, though its chain is weak in my view, as I have explained in al-Mishkat (3629) and al-Rawd al-Nadir (705).
2318 — “Whoever among you begins the day secure in his dwelling, healthy in his body, and possessing the provision of his day, it is as though the whole world has been gathered for him in its entirety.”
It has been narrated from Ubayd Allah ibn Mihsan al-Ansari, Abu al-Darda’, Ibn Umar, and Ali.
- As for the hadith of the Ansari, his son Salamah ibn Ubayd Allah ibn Mihsan al-Ansari narrates it from his father, attributed to the Prophet. It was transmitted by al-Bukhari in al-Adab al-Mufrad (300) and al-Tarikh (3/1/373), al-Tirmidhi (2347), Ibn Majah (2/525), al-Humaydi in his Musnad, no. 439, al-Uqayli in al-Duafa’ (166), Ibn Abi al-Dunya in al-Qana’ah (2/4/2), al-Khatib in al-Tarikh (3/364), al-Bayhaqi in al-Zuhd (14/1), and al-Quda’i in his Musnad (45/2), all of them through him with this chain. Al-Uqayli said: “Salamah ibn Ubayd Allah is unknown as a transmitter; no one corroborates his hadith, and he is known only through it.”
