Al-Ḥāfiẓ said in al-Taqrīb: “Truthful, but makes mistakes.”
Third: A group, including Wakīʿ, narrated it from ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, from ʿAbd Allah ibn Mawhab, from Tamīm. Some of them said, “Ibn Wahb: I heard Tamīm narrate this report.” It was transmitted by al-Tirmidhī (2113), Ibn Mājah (2/171), al-Dāraquṭnī, al-Bayhaqī, Aḥmad (4/103), and Ibn Abī Shaybah in al-Muṣannaf (11/408).
Al-Tirmidhī said: “We know it only through the hadith of ʿAbd Allah ibn Wahb—though it is also said: Ibn Mawhab—from Tamīm al-Dārī. Some inserted Qabīṣah ibn Dhuʾayb between ʿAbd Allah ibn Wahb and Tamīm al-Dārī, but this is not sound; Yaḥyā ibn Ḥamzah narrated it.”
I say: This Yaḥyā is trustworthy and among the narrators of the two Ṣaḥīḥs. If he preserved it correctly, then this is an addition from a trustworthy narrator which must be accepted. Otherwise, the narration of the group from ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, omitting Qabīṣah, is sounder. They were supported by Ḥafṣ ibn Ghiyāth in al-Ṭabarānī (1272), Isḥāq ibn Yūsuf al-Azraq in Aḥmad (4/102), and Ibn al-Mubārak in ʿAbd al-Razzāq’s al-Muṣannaf (6/20/9872 and 9/39/16271). He said: “Ibn al-Mubārak said: ‘He inherits from him if he has no heir.’ I mentioned this to al-Thawrī, and he said: ‘He inherits; he has a greater right to him than anyone else.’”
It may therefore be said that the chain is interrupted between ʿAbd Allah ibn Mawhab and Tamīm. The answer is that he explicitly stated that he heard it from Tamīm in several narrations:
First: Wakīʿ’s narration in Ibn Mājah and Aḥmad.
Second: Abū Nuʿaym’s narration in al-Bayhaqī and Aḥmad (4/103), and likewise al-Dārimī (2/377).
